The route starts at the summit of Pointe de la Masse at an altitude of 2804 meters. Follow the red Longet piste for 50 meters going completely west. A sign on the left reading "Itinéraire du Lac du Loup" indicates the start where you must pass under a rope at the edge of the piste. Ski the beautiful southern facing dale slightly steep at the start with 25 to 30° and then flat areas, then continue by following the bottom of a talweg facing southeast with small slopes followed by flat areas. Be careful of the northern slopes under the Lachemonde crests which are avalanchous.
At 2300 meters traverse a narrow part on the left towards the north and move towards Lac du Lou refuge which is at the end of the lake towards the spillway without losing too much altitude. From the refuge where several routes converge, follow a packed road on the left bank, then traverse a bridge still by following the road to go to the right bank. Continue to pass to the red Boismint piste under the Plan de l'Eau, and return to Pont de la Chasse which is the blue track of Boulevard Cumin. Follow this boulevard while pushing slightly on your poles until the start of La Masse gondola.
Innumerable variants are possible: Starting below the ski patrol's hut on the completely east facing slopes inclined at 30°, or by following the crest in the direction of Cime de Caron sometimes on the Maurienne slope, sometimes Tarin slope. You must climb the crest by sidestepping or on foot in certain places. You can go as far as the pass of Grande Combe or Pierre Blanche. All the dales you find are skiable and lead to Lac du Lou.
It is possible to return to Val Thorens and Cime de Caron with Boismint 1 chair lift to do other wilderness skiing routes.
